Twitter

Twitter has begun sending users a weekly email digest of the “most relevant” tweets and stories shared by the people they follow.

The introduction of the feature comes a few months after Twitter acquired Summify, a startup that gathered news from a user’s various social networks and compiled it in daily emails. The Summify team moved from Vancouver to Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco.

In a blog post today, Twitter said stories in the email are presented much like they are under the Discover tab on the Twitter site. That is, there’s a headline, a summary, and then a row of thumbnails that shows who tweeted the story. Users can click the headline to read the story, check out related tweets from the people they follow, and click a link in the email to tweet the piece themselves.

Tweets are displayed as they are on Twitter, and the email includes tweets that captured the imagination of those a user follows, even if the user doesn’t follow the person who actually sent the tweet. You can see who among your followees retweeted or favorited those tweets, and retweet, favorite, reply to, or read the chatter around them yourself as well.

“We’re rolling out this new email to everyone over the next few weeks, so keep checking your inbox for new messages from Twitter,” Othman Laraki, Twitter’s director of Growth and International, wrote in the blog post. “Like other Twitter email notifications, you can manage your preferences for this new digest in your notification settings.”

Earlier this month, on the day the Discovery tab was announced, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo confirmed that “onboarding” new users was a continuing challenge, saying it’s difficult to show them the benefit of the platform. “We need to make it super simple and dead easy for both our existing users and users new to the platform,” he said at the time.

Graphic DesignEver since color television was invented in 1953, color has been critical to telling a visual story.  Whether you are a start-up or established business, spending the extra money on color images or color ink may seem out of the question when you are launching a marketing campaign. But using color could mean the difference between whether your marketing materials get read, or tossed into file zero—the trash. Putting it simply, color gets noticed. Printing in color can improve retention, productivity and generate significant financial returns.  A recent Xerox Color Survey reported that 76% of respondents said they could find information faster when printed in color. So as you think about developing collateral materials for your small business — think color.

Here are 5 ways color can improve your small business:

Create a color logo: There are five common principles of logo design. A logo must be simple and memorable which means it is easy to recognize. A logo must also be versatile & appropriate. This means it can be scaled to any size and it must be right for your type of business. You wouldn’t use an elegant font for a pizza joint. Good logos feature something unexpected or unique without being over the top. An effective logo should be timeless and stand the test of time. Always use at least two colors in a logo and hire a professional to assist you.  Your company name in a stylized font is NOT a logo.

Colorful business cards:  You want your business card to be memorable. Use at least two colors in your business cards. Even consider using a strong background color to stand out. Invest in a quality paper stock as well. You want your attention to detail to be noticed. Do not order business cards that are free off of the internet. It’s printed on the back that they were free and that could hurt your credibility with the person you give them to.

Smiling Color Headshot: Anyone in business should have a professional headshot. This is a must have for all your social media profiles and could be used on your website and in your marketing materials. You need a friendly, smiling headshot because – remember you are selling yourself as much as your product or service.  Investment should be around $300 – $500 to get one taken.

Color flyers:  You should have a color one-sided or two–sided flyer or posters to promote your products and services.  Consider glossy flyers, they always look more expensive and polished. Great flyers include a headline, which describes what you specialize in, your company logo, great color photos of you, your employees in action or your products.  Also be sure to include at least a partial list of your offerings.

Color Direct Mailer:  Have you ever received a black and white mailer from someone looking for business from you?  What did you think about the business who sent it? Not much, right? Don’t make that mistake. Design a direct mail piece that represents you well. It should feature color pictures of your products or services being used or performed in action.  Make sure it includes your color logo, complete contact information and a special offer as your call to action.  For example, include a promotion of “10% off if you mention this flyer when placing an order.”

Want to take your materials to the next level? Engage a professional when designing your materials; it can make all the difference. Eighty-seven percent of respondents in a recent Xerox survey said professional graphics used in marketing materials such a brochures was a key ingredient in the success of a product or service.

Internet users should be wary of an international phone scam that allows people full access to their computer, according to a report on Sunday.

The Weekend Argus reported that victims get a call on their land line from someone claiming to be a Microsoft employee, alerting them to a computer problem.

The scammers claim the victim’s computer is submitting error messages and contains corrupt files that could damage it.

According to the report, the user is led to a programme called Microsoft Event Viewer, which displays error messages. They are then told to go to a website and download software to fix the problem.

Some South Africans had fallen victim to the scam, giving over full control of their computer with an added insult of a £185

San Francisco – Apple launched the new iPad on Friday in 10 countries, and though queues were generally shorter than seen for the launch of the iPad 2 a year ago, analysts said that the sellout of online pre-order stocks boded well for a first day sales figure of one million iPads plus.

In San Francisco’s flagship Apple store, the line snaked along only one side of a city block, a quarter as long as last year’s line. At New York’s Fifth Avenue main Apple store, market analysts from Piper Jaffray said that 750 people waited in line for the launch compared to 1 190 for the iPad 2 sale a year ago.

“We believe 3rd gen iPad sales are off to a strong start based on healthy lines in New York City and favourable language from Apple around the pre-order,” the analysts said in a note to investors.

“We expected the line to be shorter than 750 given nine days of ‘off-the-charts’ pre-orders… There was no pre-order for iPad 2, which drove customers to stores.

“We think that on Monday, Apple will announce over 1m units of the 3rd gen iPad were sold on launch day including pre-orders.”

Apart from the US, the iPad launched in Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, Switzerland and Britain.

On March 23, the new iPad is set to launch in 25 more markets, including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Macao, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

Strong demand for the new iPad sent Apple shares past $600 for the first time ever on Thursday. While it looks the same as its predecessor, the iPad features a screen with four times as many pixels and also has a larger battery, a quad-core processor and more powerful camera.

Prices for the new device match those of its predecessor, the iPad 2, starting at $499 for the 16GB Wi-Fi only version, up to $829 for a 64GB version with a 4G cellular option.

The stock milestone was reached just a month after Apple’s shares passed the $500 mark and reflected analysts’ optimism about strong sales of the new device and other Apple products driving the company’s revenues and profits even higher. The stock is now up almost 50% on the year.

The iPad sold out last week in pre-orders from the company’s websites and Apple opened its stores two hours earlier than usual to meet demand.

Analysts have raised their price targets for Apple following the announcement of the iPad, with many predicting it will shoot past the $700m mark from its current level of $580.

Many analysts have raised their forecasts of the number of iPads Apple is expected to sell, with Cannacord Genuity predicting 2012 totals of 65.6 million units sold, up from a previous estimate of 55.9 million. For 2013 the firm predicts iPad sales of 90.6 million, up from 79.7 million in an earlier estimate.

San Jose, CA (PRWEB) February 14, 2012

4D Incorporated today announced that it is shipping 4D v13, a new version of its development and database platform – a complete, integrated environment for desktop & client/server business applications. With over 10,000 ISVs counting millions of end users around the world, numerous developers and users can start benefiting from 4D’s latest technologies starting today.

This new version includes many new data visualization tools for a richer customer experience and the latest technology and standards to facilitate the Web-enablement of existing applications.”

As the business application ecosystem evolves, so must the tools used to create and deliver solutions to users. Rich data, Web technologies and deployment across a wide variety of platforms and locations are becoming increasingly important, while traditional desktop and client-server solutions continue to be critical to business.

Highlights of the new version:

Data visualization and interaction commands and features to enrich applications
Introspection tools to give developers more accurate control over their own code

With dozens of new features that address the latest technologies, 4D v13 is designed to make application development better: Both in terms of the features and functionalities developers can bring to end-users, and for the daily task of writing and maintaining code.

“We are looking forward to taking advantage of the new 4D v13 technologies,” said Jeffrey Kain, Executive Vice President of Orchard Software Corp. “The new Webkit integration guarantees HTML compatibility across platforms and extends support to third party JavaScript libraries and frameworks, so we can keep enriching our end-user experience. And the new process control model will deliver greater scalability to our customers.”

“4D has proved to be a very successful platform to develop business applications such as CRM, financial and other data-centric applications,” said Tom Miller, General Manager at 4D. “It is a leading platform for departmental and enterprise applications within the healthcare industry, as well as government agencies where data accuracy is of the ultimate importance.”

“Developers who have waited for 4D v13 will not be disappointed,” said Stephen Orth, VP of Development at The Aquila Group, Inc. “With this release, 4D has dramatically improved the developer experience. There are plenty of new features that end-users will appreciate and the changes made at the developer level are the most appealing.”

Our apologies for one of our computers being out of action yesterday – but we’ve been hit with this virus – right through Norton Internet Security 2012 automatically updated – I plan on taking this up with them.

System Check virus, without any sort of hesitation, implies some great-looking but yet the bogus program which states of itself to render supposed services in the field of computer maintenance and optimizing the speed of your workstation.

Nevertheless, it’s just another name, same as Master Utilities virus.  What do these two applications have in common? Well, nearly everything, except for the name probably.

They all have exactly the same user interface and do the same evil and malicious deeds to the computers they contaminate. System Check typically uses trojan horses in order to accomplish the penetration into the computers with weak anti-virus protection.

It is thus installed by a small cyber pest whose small size allows it to overcome the defense barriers of an average computer connected to the Internet. In fact, trojans always take the direct part in bogus software spreading due to the fact that they are often hard to identify and they can fulfill the universal role when it comes to contamination of computers.

However, you don’t encounter any trojan. What you face is the fruits of their evil activities. In the case with System Check scam, the results include representing the range of fabricated alerts and scanners whose falsity should not be doubted by you.

The rogueware initiates its well-looking scanners to demonstrate you in the end that you have problems. It would indeed be quite a horrifying news to find out about critical system errors with the system drive, RAM memory, registry settings, etc. If reported by System Check, however, all such issues do not ever deserve your trust, simply because they are all fake.

system check virus

This rip-off application lists the scary bugs with one purpose in mind – to present to you the entirely wrong idea of how your computer is doing. Additionally, it highly recommends you get the errors fixed, but you will have to do something before the ‘repair’ begins. System Check must be bought first – this is what it tells you to do.

Just imagine what will happen after the payment is effected by you. Right, nothing at all. The virus will just let go and stop reporting the fictitious and senseless errors that were never there initially. What a pack of lies.

Do not pay for this rogueware, just get rid of the System Check virus.

The standard ‘Add/Remove Programs’ does not work with this program.

You can try it, but the system restore also doesn’t respond

Go here for the removal instructions

Tips: If you cannot access anything – hold down the windows button + R (This will give you the Run function)

If the unhide system files does not work – use the Unhide utility from www.bleepingcomputer.com

P.S. I take no responsibility for things that could happen whilst following these instructions – I have no affiliation with any of the linked sites in this post

Welcome to 2012

Has this ever happened to you?  You pick up the phone and you hear an unclear rambling of a sales script on the other side – something to the effect of Hallo, how are you today, I’m ABC and I’m phoning from XYZ and we do POO (All in that annoying “I’m so excited about my product” phony voice).

All you can think about is how to get rid of this person – sometimes you had a bad day and the last thing you need is somebody selling you something and you get rude, sometimes you feel sorry for the person on the other side and tell him / her to phone you next week. (When you’ll be in a 12 month meeting), and 2 seconds later you have forgotten all about it.

But how does the telesales person feel now – Do you think they are “special” people with no feelings – that they have thick skins, don’t take anything personally and they just happily go on to call (bug) another person?

Yes, they do but not happily I can assure you – they do it, because they have been taught it is all in the numbers – the more people you call the most likely you are to “succeed”.  They have been given a script that they must use (never mind that they can’t even pronounce / understand some of the words in it). I can’t help but wonder just how soul destroying it must be …

If you think by now that I’m asking you to be nicer to telesales people, you need to read further …

Here’s a thought to telesales and other sales people – why not focus on your “prospect’s” (I hate that word) problems, seeing if you can help them solve those problems, rather than on your “solutions” and the company you work for, and on all the wonderful things you / your company has done and bla bla bla, on and on about you and what you do, and assuming that the person you phoned needs or wants or even can afford your product.

If you are the person on the the other side of the line, wouldn’t you appreciate that somebody actually cares about you and the problems you are facing and not just about the closing a sale?

Sales people – you would have noticed that the person you were phoning didn’t even know what you were selling, because when they heard the start of that script – they stopped listening,  that’s the point – people hate being sold to – they like to make their own decisions, so why not involve them, instead of just rushing off that script, closing your eyes and pray for the “yes” -  you might just enjoy doing your job again.

What do you think – is this too easy?

Feel free to add your comments, and of course I wish you all a prosperous 2012.
